The Indian School Certificate (ISC) examinations are conducted for standard 12 by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), the same body that conducts ICSE for grade 10. The exam criteria follow the recommendations of the Indian New Education Policy of 1986 and are regulated by the University of Cambridge. It is the only qualified board from India to have the unique distinction of being recognized by universities in the United Kingdom and some other Commonwealth countries as equivalent to their ‘A’ level qualifications while seeking admissions to universities in these countries.
ISC is known for its extensive syllabus and comprehensive course content. The medium of instruction and exam conduction is English which is also a compulsory subject. Apart from English, candidates have to choose other three to five subjects. However, students seeking admissions in engineering courses must choose physics, chemistry, and mathematics to be eligible for major engineering entrance exams. For candidates aspiring for medical entrances, biology is a must and they can swap mathematics with biology in class 12.
ISC is a difficult exam to crack owing to its massive and detailed curriculum. Additionally, the need to prepare for JEE simultaneously puts further stress on the students.
